I frequent many Mexican restaurants and much like the revelation I had about the saguaro cactus as the de facto symbol of the southwest, one day I realized that the eateries showcased a unique segment of folk art and I set out to document the images before they disappeared due to the arrival of the vinyl signal industry.

The saguaro is a ubiquitous symbol in the area and has
evolved into a universal icon for the southwest, spreading
far beyond the it’s limited natural range on the Sonoran desert.
